Present and Future of Muay Thai...

Muay Thai has changed across the years. Changed and evolved from a battlefield close quarters killing ground technique based on a fighting tradition passed on from generation to generation up to the present time.

But despite the changes of history, Muay Thai has lost none of its exotic appeal and even mystique. Muay Thai is still the fighting art to beat. The fighting art that defeats all challenges from Kung Fu, Karate, Taekwando and the latest kickboxing fashions. They have all come to Thailand, not just once but many times and from many places to test themselves.

Muay Thai has lost none of its appeal in Thailand. The television fight broadcasts rate among the Kingdom's most popular programmes. In the provinces, villages cluster around any available TV to watch. In the city, people disappear from the streets while Thailand is watching Muay Thai.

Thai Boxing is also becoming increasingly popular outside of Thailand. It has its enthusiasts and practitioners in the Americas, Australia, Japan, Europe, as well as in many other countries around the world.

The illustrious history of Muay Thai will continue as it receives greater recognition and gains in international popularity.

Weight Classes in the History of Muay Thai

The History of Muay Thai Nai Khanom TomFrom the history of Muay Thai, before the introduction of weight classes, a fighter could and did fight all comers regardless of size and weight differences. However, the introduction of the weight classes meant that the fighters were more evenly matched and instead of there being one champion, there became one for each weight class.

Most Muay Thai fighters belong to the lighter weight classes. Seventy percent of all fighters belong to the fly and bantam weight divisions. There are welterweight and middleweight fights but they are not seen that often and the heavier categories seldom fight.

Muay Thai Equipment History

In the history of Muay Thai, Muay Thai has always been a sport for the people as well as a military fighting skill. In all its golden ages, the people have trained and practiced the sport whether they were King or commoner. It was a part of the school curriculum right up to the 1920's when it was withdrawn because it was felt that the injury rate was too high. The people however, continued to study it in gyms and clubs just as they do today.

The History of Muay Thai King Naresuan Muay Thai HeadbandThe people have always followed the sport and have been instrumental in moving it from the battlefield to the ring. They have been as much a part of making it a sport as have the Kings. One of the prime movers in transforming the sport was the Tiger King, who not only influenced fighting styles but also the equipment.

During the reign of the Tiger King, the hands and forearms began being bound with strips of horse hair. This was to serve a dual purpose - protect the fighter and inflict more damage on the opponent. Later, these were replaced by hemp ropes or starched strips of cotton. For particular challenge matches and with the fighters agreement, ground glass was mixed with glue and spread on the strips.

The changes that the sport has undergone have been changes to equipment used rather than radical change. For example, Thai fighters have always worn groin guards. A kick or knee to the groin was a perfectly legal move up until the 1930's. In the early days, the protection was made from tree bark or sea shells held in place with a piece of cloth tied between the legs and around the waist. The History of Muay Thai Arm Band

The groin guard later became a triangular shaped pillow, red or blue, tied around the waist with a through strap between the legs. The pillow went, after a boxer on a trip to Malaysia saw a groin box. He came back with the idea, which is close to the original idea of the sea shell and since then, Muay Thai fighters have used them.

The 1930's saw the most radical change in the sport. It was then that it was codified and today's rules and regulations were introduced. Rope bindings of the arms and hands were abandoned and gloves took their place.

King Rama VI Era

It wasn't till the reign of King Rama VI that the standard ring surrounded by ropes came into use, as did time keeping by the clock. Before this period, time keeping was done by floating a pierced coconut shell on a boat of water. When the coconut piece sank, a drum signalled the end of the round.

King Rama V Era

The History of Muay Thai King Rama VFrom the history of Muay Thai, Muay Thai has always been popular but like most sports, there have been times when it was more in fashion. In the reign of King Rama V, many Muay Thai matches were Royal Command fights. These boxers were rewarded with military titles from the King. Today the titles, like Muen Muay Mee Chue from Chaiya or Muen Muay Man Mudh from Lopburi are virtually untranslatable. They mean something comparable to Major of Boxing. At the time they were much prized and respected titles.

The Tiger King (Prachao Sua) Era

The change in the art was to continue under another fighting King - Prachao Sua - the Tiger King. From the history of Muay Thai, he loved Muay Thai so much that he often fought incognito in village contests, beating the local champions. During the reign of the Tiger King the nation was at peace. The King, to keep the army busy, ordered it to train in Muay Thai. The interest in the sport was already high but now it took off yet again.

Thai Boxing became the favorite sport and pastime of the people, the army, and the King. Historical sources show that people from all walks of life flocked to training camps. Rich, poor, young and old all wanted some of the action. Every village staged its prize fights and had its champions. Every bout became a betting contest as well as a contest of local pride. The betting tradition has remained with the sport and today large sums are wagered on the outcome of fights.

King Naresuan Era in 1584

The History of Muay Thai King NaresuanIn the history of Muay Thai, national issues were decided by Muay Thai contests. The first great upsurge of interest in Muay Thai as a sport, as well as a battlefield skill, was under King Naresuan in 1584, a time known as the Ayuddhaya period. During this period, every soldier trained in Muay Thai and could use it, as the King himself did. Slowly Muay Thai moved away from its root in the 'Chupasart' and new fighting techniques were evolving.

The History of Muay Thai

The history of Muay Thai was lost when the Burmese army sacked and razed Ayuddhaya to the ground. With them, much of the early Muay Thai history also went. The little we do know about Muay Thai comes from the writings of the Burmese, Cambodian, early European visitors and some of the chronicles of the Lanna Kingdom - Chiangmai.

What all sources agree on is that Muay Thai began as a close combat battlefield fighting skill. More deadly than the weapons it replaced. The sources aren't clear and often contradict each other. But there are two main theories. One says that the art developed as the Thai people moved down from China; honed in the struggle for land. The other theory of the history of Muay Thai says that the Thai people were already here and that Muay Thai developed to defend the land and people from constant invasion threats.

The history of Muay Thai second theory, while controversial, has considerable academic backing and archaeological evidence. The first is, however, possible as the area opened up to the early pioneers. What is known is that the history of Muay Thai was an essential part of Thai culture right from its dawn. And in Thailand, it's the sport of kings.

Thai Kickboxing Kicks

Also termed as Muay Thai Feet Techniques, Kicks are an important means of offense in Thai Kickboxing. Human feet, known as “Tao” in southern Thailand, are believed to be the most violent and crucial weapons for attack.

There are various types of kicks that are practiced by Thai kick boxers. The most prominent among them are the Teep or front kick and the roundhouse kick. Other important varieties of kicking include Tae Pa Mak or basic kick, medium level kick, Kao Loi or high level kick or Flying kick, Neb, crescent kick, spinning back kick, Tae Chieng or diagonal kick, Tae Tad or sweeping kick, Tae Pub Nok or the kick to the outside of the knee joint and Tae Pub Nai or the kick to the inside of the knee joint. Roundhouse kick involves a complete rotation of the body. While practicing the roundhouse kick, boxers are trained to deliver the kick using the shin, since it is believed to be the strongest part of the foot.

Apart from these, the boxer can even deliver kicks using his knees. These Knee kicks or Taeng Kow are usually lethal and are used to strike during a clinch. There are various types of knee kicks practiced by the boxers. These include straight knee kick or Kow Dhrong, Diagonal knee kick, curving knee kick, horizontal knee kick, knee slap and flying knee kick.

In order to use these techniques for striking, it is mandatory for the boxer to be properly trained. Regular practice can improve the power, agility and timing of the kick.

What are Muay Thai boxing history and customs ? Muay Thai or Thai Kick boxing is the national sport of Thailand. It is an ancient martial art form and is practiced in several countries. Muay Thai is also referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs”. It is a brutal and versatile martial art form, that requires rigorous and disciplined training regimen to be taken under the guidance of experienced professionals. Muay Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed, cardio-vascular endurance and fighting spirit.

All Muay Thai professionals must abide by certain morals and principles that form the soul of the sport. Training methods involve a disciplinary approach that imbibes these morals. Muay Thai training focuses on body conditioning and improving the toughness of an individual. This training regimen involves a series of combat sport conditioning such as running, shadow boxing, rope jumping, body weight resistance exercises, medicine ball exercises, abdominal exercises and weight training.

Before starting the Muay Thai training, every learner should be acquainted with the terminology and various weapons used during the sport. Coaches provide specific Muay Thai training to fighters using different methods such as Thai Pads, focus mitts, heavy bag and sparring. Boxer can practice punches, kicks, knees and elbow strikes with Thai Pad training. During this training, trainer wears protective Thai pads on the forearms, hands and abdomen. Boxers can develop their hand’s speed, punch combinations, timing, punching power and technique using Focus Mitts training method. Heavy bag training and sparring methods are required to test and evaluate the technique, skills and strategy of the fighter. During sparring methods, the fighters are taught with specific strategies and tactics such as clinching and kneeing only, close fighting, cutting off the ring and keeping away from an aggressive fighter.

Aerobic kickboxing Exercise :

Are you looking for a good Condition Or Aerobic Programs? Aerobic Kickboxing Exercise or Cardio-kickboxing or Aerobic boxing can be defined as a high-impact cardio-vascular workout where the elements of traditional kickboxing, martial arts and the aerobics are blended together. This form of exercise has proved to be extremely beneficial in improving the fitness levels of an individual. Around 350 to 500 calories of energy is burnt per hour while doing a cardio-kickboxing.

An aerobic kickboxing exercise session is usually of one-hour duration, comprising of 15 minutes of warm-up, 30 minutes of rigorous kickboxing, 5 minutes of cooling down and another 10 minutes of stretching and muscle conditioning exercises. The warm-up session includes stretching, jumping jacks and push-ups. The kickboxing session involves practicing knee strikes, punches and kicks. Stretching exercises are vital while doing cardio-kickboxing. These can tighten the loosened muscles for the rigorous training as well as relax fatigued muscles and protect them from tearing. Some instructors also prefer to use punching bags and jump ropes during the training session.

Aerobic kickboxing exercise offers several advantages. Apart from keeping the body fit, the controlled punches and kicks aid in reducing stress, ensures better blood circulation, tones the body, increases flexibility, sharpens reflexes and improves coordination and balance.

Although aerobic kickboxing exercise is advantageous, there are certain negative aspects as well. The most important drawback is the risk of getting injured while exercising. Injury to the joints and soreness are quite common. Getting trained under proper guidance can reduce these injuries to a considerable extent.

Aerobic kickboxing exercises must always be practiced under the supervision of a certified professional instructor. People suffering with diseases affecting the joints, knee, hips, ankle or back should avoid these exercises.

Muay Thai Clinch Techniques :

Clinch is an inseparable part of several combat sports such as Judo, Amateur wrestling, mixed martial arts and Sambo. The Muay Thai Clinch Technique can be explained as grappling of hands around the neck of the opponent during an offensive or defensive combat. The Muay Thai Clinch technique comprises an integral part of Thai Kickboxing.

Clinch technique is a part of stand-up fighting and is commonly used in Muay Thai. There are several methods of performing the Muay Thai Clinch Technique. The conventional and correct clinch technique is pressing the forearms against the opponent’s collarbone and grappling around his head with the hands. Another popular method of practicing clinch is to hold the head with the hands and throw the opponent down. While performing Clinch, the palm of one hand is placed on the back of the other. But both the fingers should never interlock. Since the players will be using gloves inside the ring, they can move apart their fingers.

Muay Thai Clinch Technique is an effective method to control the aggressiveness of the opponent. It is different from several other martial art forms such as Judo as it permits the use of Knee techniques, punching, kicking and delivering elbow blows during a Thai Clinch. These attacking methods provide the boxer with the advantage of striking under the Clinch. The player can use single collar tie position and deliver punches such as hooks and uppercuts. Alternatively, he can also use the double collar tie position to control the opponent and simultaneously deliver his kicks or elbows or knees and knock out his opponent.

Muay Thai Kickboxing Fitness Standards

Muay Thai Kickboxing is an ancient martial art form of Thailand. Also called as the “Art of Eight Limbs”, this is the most brutal sport involving punches, kicks, knees and elbows. Getting properly trained under the supervision of an experienced and certified professional instructor is essential for learning Muay Thai. In order to provide a properly structured training, it is always advised to improve the fitness standards of the participant.

The prime objective of Muay Thai kickboxing fitness standards is to develop the strength and stamina required to perform the arduous and lethal kickboxing techniques. These fitness standards involve drills, stretching exercises, abdominal exercises, building up shoulders and strengthening calf muscles. These exercises can be performed thrice a day after the completion of rigorous training. A participant must perform 100-200 sit-ups, 50-100 push-ups, chin-ups, 300 knees, 200 kicks and also drills on the bag.

There are varied categories of Muay Thai kickboxing fitness standards. The speedball or punching ball is used to build the shoulder muscles. For strengthening of calf muscles and developing balance, an old truck tire is used. To build the neck and jaw muscles, a loop of plastic tube is gripped between the teeth. This tube contains few weights hanged to it and the head is raised using neck muscles. Toughness of the abdominal muscles can be achieved by using a medicine ball or by having a partner hitting the stomach with kick pads in between each sit up. Participants can even undertake certain free weight training routines to build their arm muscles.

Thai Kickboxing-History :

Muay Thai or Thai Kickboxing is an ancient martial art form of Thailand. It is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” and is the national sport of Thailand. Thai Kickboxing history is long and rather controversial. There are no written records available that describe the Thai Kickboxing history. But, it is widely considered that the martial art played a significant role in the evolution of Thai culture.

Historians believe that Thai Kickboxing history originated 2000 years ago from Krabi Krabong, a Siamese weapon-based style of fighting. This art form later developed into Muay Boran, which is an ancient style Muay Thai. Muay Thai was practiced as a part of close combat battlefield fighting skill by the Thai army. During the reign of King Rama V, practicing Muay Thai was made compulsory for soldiers as well as common people. Prestigious competitions and Royal command fights were held in the honor of the King. The King rewarded boxers with military titles.

Gradually, this art form evolved into a favorite sport of the people. Training camps were organized for enthusiastic learners. The contests started to be held inside a ring surrounded by ropes. The sport began to witness changes pertaining to equipment. The players began to wear groin box and gloves. The rules of the game were codified in 1930 and new regulations were introduced.

Under the patronage of King Rama VII, the Thai kickboxing scaled new peaks. International standard stadiums were constructed. Despite the transformations in the Thai Kickboxing history, the glory of the sport and the passion of the people towards it have remained unchanged.
